The Devil sends her to do his deeds and collect the sould for his bidding. She does this inspite of him not for his gain but for her own personal gain. She works to free the soul of herself and her love so they can be together for eternity.

So just to put this in She wan human once before he died then she committed suicide so she ws condemned to hell where the devil took her up on the words she spoke. Her name is Engelica which is german for angel but she has worked so long that only her love remembers her name and only when she frees him can she learn her name again.
